The Rule of Three

There is a simple rule we use for most things in our house as we journey to becoming a minimalist family and that is the Rule of Three. We use this for clothing, personal care, and household items.  The idea came to me when I was cleaning out the clothes in my closet and wanted to get down to the essentials. Now I have three cardigans, three tees, three blouses, three pairs of black pants, etc.

In the bathroom I got down to extreme minimalism with natural beauty and decided the Rule of Three would work there as well. Now I use three tools for personal care: a skin brush, a razor, and a hair brush. I use three products: soap, shampoo, and coconut oil.

In the kitchen we still struggle with going minimal.  We like the convenience of appliances but I resent cleaning and storing them as well as the expense of acquiring them and the electricity they use. Our ideal minimalist life would include healthy raw foods that we just chop or eat by hand. I haven’t convinced my husband yet but we are working towards that with vegetarian meals and eating whole foods.  The Rule of Three in the kitchen would include: cutting board, all-purpose knife, one serving tray, and three shallow bowls.
