Extreme Minimalism: Clothes in the Closet

I dream of simplicity. My clothing has always been stressful. There is such pressure to buy the latest trend or to get something by a great designer, something new. The trouble is that I have reached that point in my life that I care less about all of that. I still like to look nice but each time I see a person that is an exact copy of five other people I have seen the same day I want to throw up. Discovering that I am secure enough not to be like everybody else has been energizing. Yesterday changes it all. I was walking through the thrift store trying to think of ways to minimize my clothing and keeping things simple. Lately, no one at work notices when I wear pretty much the same thing every day. The things I really love to wear seem to surface frequently. So, without further hesitation I revamped my closet and am happier than ever.

Gone are the “just in case” items such as turtle necks that I hate to wear. Gone are the  Jeans that don’t fit right and the incentive pants and skirts that are too small. Some extreme minimalists would say this is still too much in my closet. It is right for me.

  1. “It is right for me.”

Isn’t that what it should be about? I think everyone has to find that balance.. I just started a project of my own, and don’t think I will ever be a hardcore minimalist. But if we through our choices of owning less can feel happier AND perhaps help someone unfortunate or even the environment, then it feels right for me too :-)

  3. I have the need to break out from boredom and repetition so I can’t settle for too small a quantity of clothing. I also don’t wash til I have a full load, so need lots of work out gear. I am impressed by your capsule sized wardrobe!

  4. I like it. :) Even if I wasn’t trying to exist on less than 900$ a month, and hadn’t run out of clothes 5 years ago, that would still be my philosophy. :) (And people notice far less about us than we imagine. )
Thanks for following, right there with you.

  5. I made a big lifestyle change from living in a house to now living in a 5th wheel RV – coming on 3 years now. My closet now is much smaller. So I had to get rid of lots of clothes, and got rid of all my furniture, etc. I couldn’t believe how our “stuff” affects our energy. My life has so much less stress now and my mind feels so much more clear just from getting rid of “stuff” I don’t need.

  6. I am not sure if it is a subtle integration of that Eastern religion “detachment” thing but reducing portfolio in the area of personal effects makes life much simpler as you suggest. Thanks visit my blog – funny stuff there.

  7. It takes some of us longer to “let go” than others. I love color too much to wear black like you, but I do think it’s time to get rid of some of my treasures. Thanks for subscribing to my blog. Sandraj
